About the Author

Debbie Price is the author’s maiden name until she was married in 1979 and became Lechmanski. She has lived on Shelter Island since she was born. As a child, living on an island was a great place to grow up. But as she got older, having to wait for the ferry both going off and returning home became something she really didn’t like. But it is something one just has to learn to accept.

Debbie loves animals, as the readers will see in this book. It doesn’t matter if it is a wild animal or just one that needs some help; she’s there for them. She wishes some of the things that happened to her hadn’t, but she put herself in God’s hands to get her through those hard times.

Debbie was too young to understand why she had to lose her dad at three and a half years old, but it happened and can’t be reversed. Then, for most of her life as a youngster, she was with her grandparents most of the time. Her pop and gramma were always there for her. She loved them with all her heart, as the readers will see. Her mom knew she was just up the lane and a phone call away.

Living on a true island surrounded by water, there was always a beach she could go to-just to be by herself or collect shells. People used to ask her when she worked for a hotel and when she would pick them up at the ferry, “What is on the island?” Her answer was houses, roads, a few hotels, and a lot of beaches.

Debbie would say her life growing up on Shelter Island was great. Her two sons own their own homes on the island, unlike how she grew up. All her sisters and her brother moved off the island.

Debbie hopes the readers enjoy her memories as she remembers them growing up on a small island.
