Enrolled in Beauty School Using My Inheritance

When I was ready to graduate, my teacher knew I was going to be married in a few months, and she asked me what last name I wanted on the paperwork. Being it was June and I was getting married in August, I told her to put my married name if she could. She told me that would be okay as long as I did get married. She then added that if something were to happen and I didn’t get married, there would be a real big problem, but I told her that I would take the chance. That way, I wouldn’t have to have my name changed on the license. Okay, yes, I know I’m taking a risk, but the way I looked at it, the lady in the office asked me for it, I didn’t think of it. In August, I got married, and all was well.

When I got my license in the mail, I showed it to my boyfriend, and he laughed. He told me, “Well, it looks like the wedding is on, for you are already using my name.” We both laughed, for I had told him when I had put his name on the license. After I got my license, I waited until I was married before I went out to find a job. I had an interview in Southampton, but I never found the salon. Then I stopped into a salon in Mattituck. I met with the owner, and I was hired on the spot. I was to start the job the next week.

I started in my first hair salon. I stayed there for one and a half years, and then I was expecting my first child. The other workers told me not to let the boss know, for she didn’t like workers to take leave due to pregnancy, so I kept it to myself until I started to show. She did have a problem with the fact I was expecting, but she didn’t fire me like I was told she would. I worked right up until one month before my son was born. She did like me, and she told me I could come back if I was going to return after my child was born. But I didn’t go back to that shop. My mom had asked me if I would like to help her in her salon, so that wasn’t a hard decision to make. I started working with my mom, and I worked there for many years. Then when a lot of her customers passed on and the shop got too slow for two people, I wasn’t working for her anymore. I did help her if she was going away or had a medical problem; I would step in for her.
