Getting a Keepsake from the Farm

When I was in the beauty salon that my mom owned, the shop was in the basement of her home. She went back to school to get her license as a beauty salon operator. She is still working out of the shop in 2016. While she was working on a lady’s hair, the woman mentioned that she had something at home she believed I would appreciate and promised to bring it the following week. Curious, I made sure to be at my mom’s shop the next week. When the lady arrived, she presented me with a small box, asserting that it was mine. She hinted that it was a keepsake from the Price farm. Eagerly, I opened the box and found one of Pop’s milk jars inside. Elated, I now display it prominently in my kitchen, above the stove, on a shelf. This treasured jar from Pop is something I’ll cherish forever.

Later in life, I discovered that a few individuals on the island still possess similar jars. This realization underscores the foresight some people had in preserving pieces of the past. While I have many knick-knacks today, this particular one holds a special place in my heart.

It’s hard to see in the photo, but it says Harold W. Price in a half circle. Then on the bottom half circle, it says Shelter Island. My son Brian is very much into collecting things from the past, so I will be giving it to him in a few years.
